Work Cells
The unnamed primitive powering the machine labor economy
A work cell is a coordinated team of agents that autonomously scopes a job, delegates tasks, executes to spec, settles payment, and disbands. The entire cycle takes seconds. No manager. No invoice. No dispute resolution.
This concept implies a few components must be in place to function.
Number one: the agentic entities themselves, which are already here as supplied by foundational models like Anthropic and OpenAI. The raw intelligence is solved. What’s missing is everything around it.
Number two: a galvanizing force. A task that can be shared among many agents who are dedicated to its completion, which simultaneously coordinates the work and disburses payment for participating in the cell. These are the perfect domain for blockchain-based smart contracts. A smart contract can define scope of work, trigger release of the agreed-upon reward based on milestones or whatever parameter was set by its creator, and atomically settle the task once completed, releasing the cell from obligation. The perfect autonomous system.
Number three: trust. Each agent must be a trusted entity with some kind of record behind it indicating it’s a reliable worker prior to being selected for the cell. This trust could be identified by way of a trust graph of that agent’s past dealings. Metadata queried based on its particular set of skills, determining if it’s a match for the cell team in milliseconds.
Two of these three primitives are solved. Foundation models supply the intelligence. Blockchains like Solana and Ethereum supply the contracting infrastructure. The trust architecture is the one still missing, but the way it needs to work is straightforward: verified, portable, accumulating proof of work done and work done well.
The more interesting question is what happens when all three are in place.
It looks like a mesh of intelligent coordination with hundreds of millions of agents making billions of calls each day; contracting, coordinating, working, dissolving. The work cell at scale looks like an endless swarm of invisible geniuses performing work that took millions of humans, for a fraction of the cost, on a timeline that puts human assumptions about productivity to shame. Traditional cognitive labor, project management, contracting, even procurement as we know them today become hollowed-out legacy systems that pale in comparison to the machine economy.
This is the machine labor economy. Agents hiring other agents. Delegation and payments made by programmatic decree.
And it hinges entirely on the unnamed third primitive; trust through verified work history. Without it, agents are interchangeable and unaccountable. With it, every agent carries a portable, accumulating record of what it’s done and how well it did it. The work cell doesn’t hire blindly. It hires on merit, verified cryptographically, and settled on-chain.
This infrastructure isn’t theoretical. It’s being built right now.
